How to return the number of the character at which a character or string is first found using formulas
This Mhelp clip will show you how to use the SEARCH formula in Excel. This is useful if you want to search for characters in a large string.
This Mhelp clip has twenty steps.
1 - Click cell A3.
2 - Type in the text you want to find.
3 - Click cell B3.
4 - Type in the text to search in.
5 - Click cell C3.
6 - Type the character number to search from.
7 - Click the cell where you want to display the answer.
8 - Click the Formulas tab.
9 - Click Text. A menu will appear.
10 - Click SEARCH. A dialog box will appear.
11 - Click the Find_text button.
12 - Click cell A3.
13 - Click the formula button.
14 - Click the Within_text button.
15 - Click cell B3.
16 - Click the formula button.
17 - Click the Start_num button.
18 - Click cell C3.
19 - Click the formula button.
20 - Click OK. The answer will be displayed in the cell selected.
